Most visitors planning Gambia trips stay on the coast around Kololi and spend part of their holiday exploring beyond the beach. The hard part is not finding trips in The Gambia but choosing between them: river cruises, birdwatching, village visits, historic sites, safaris across the border in Senegal and longer journeys inland all compete for a few free days.
This guide sorts the options by how much time you have, what you are interested in and what each trip costs, so you can build a short list before you contact a tour operator.
Quick answer: Trips in The Gambia fall into four groups. Half-day tours start from €40 per person and suit an arrival day or a free morning. Full-day excursions cost €55–€60 per person and cover river cruises, birdwatching, village life and history. Day trips into Senegal cost around €100 per person and need a passport. Two-day trips inland to Tendaba or Georgetown start from €135 per person. On a one-week holiday, two or three trips fit comfortably alongside beach days.
Prices are per person as listed by Janeya Tours in October 2026. Group size, season and private arrangements can change the final price, so always confirm for your travel date.

Choose your trip by how much time you have
Half a day: an easy introduction

Half-day tours work well on the day after you arrive, or on a morning when you still want the afternoon by the pool. Both of Janeya's half-day options start at the Kachikally Crocodile Pool in Bakau, with its sacred crocodiles, small museum and old silk cotton tree, then go in different directions:
- City Experience (€40): continues into Banjul for the Arch 22 area, city landmarks and busy market life. A good choice if you want to understand everyday Gambian life quickly.
- Garden Adventures (€45): visits the botanical garden and women's horticultural gardens in Bakau and Yundum, where local families grow vegetables and fruit for sale.
Both run in the morning or afternoon for 2–6 guests, with pickup from your hotel or apartment. Groups of three or more may qualify for a discount.
A full day: the core of most holidays
Full-day tours give you time to get past the resort area and see villages, markets, waterways and historic sites at an unhurried pace. Most cost €55–€60 per person and include pickup. They are covered by interest in the next section.
Two days or more: inland Gambia and Senegal

If you have a longer stay, an overnight trip inland shows you a very different country from the coast. The two-day Tendaba Camp trip heads upriver with village stops and a mangrove boat trip, while the Georgetown trip includes a river cruise from Kuntaur and a visit to historic Janjanbureh. Both start from €135 per person with a minimum of four travellers. For more ideas, read our guide to inland Gambia beyond the beaches.
For a full holiday built around touring, Janeya also arranges 13-day multi-day tours combining The Gambia with northern or eastern Senegal. These are tailored to your dates and accommodation, with prices from approximately €2,000 per person.

Culture and everyday life

The Gambia Round Trip is the classic all-rounder: markets, a local school, woodcarving, village life, the fishing village of Tanji and a beach stop, all in one day. If you want to spend more time in a single community, the Kubuneh Special combines a boat trip, a donkey-cart ride, a school visit, gardens, palm wine and dancing. The Four Wheel Adventure takes village roads to a beekeeping farm and a reptile visit before finishing at the Tanji Museum and fishing village.
History and heritage
The Kunta Kinteh & James Island trip travels by boat from Banjul to Juffureh, with time at the museum, a meeting with the Kunta Kinteh family and a visit to the island itself. Kunta Kinteh Island and its related sites have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2003 for their role in the history of the transatlantic slave trade. Our article on Kunta Kinteh Island and Juffureh gives useful background before you go.
The river and the mangroves

The River Gambia and its creeks are central to the country, and seeing them from a boat is one of the most relaxing ways to spend a day.
- Lazy Day Cruise (€60): after hotel pickup, the boat leaves Denton Bridge at 8:30am and cruises the creeks and main river, past mangroves, oyster collectors and fishing activity. A buffet lunch and drinks are served aboard, with swimming when the tide allows and a stop at Lamin Lodge.
- Sunset Cruise (€55): a late-afternoon cruise towards Lamin Lodge for the sunset, with a hot buffet dinner.
- Fishing Trip (€55): fishing in the creeks and mangroves, with lunch on board and time to relax on deck.
All three need a minimum of eight guests, so enquire early and Janeya can tell you whether your date is likely to run.
Birds and wildlife

The Gambia is one of West Africa's best-known birdwatching destinations, with more than 550 bird species recorded. The Bird & Breakfast trip starts early with birding by boat at Lamin, followed by breakfast and a visit to Abuko Nature Reserve. Read our introduction to birdwatching in The Gambia to see what to expect.
For larger wildlife, the Fathala Safari crosses into Senegal for a wildlife reserve visit, and the two-day Tendaba and Georgetown trips add inland river habitats.
Off the beaten track
The Makasutu day combines forest and river scenery with wildlife, lunch and traditional entertainment. For a taste of a different country, the Casamance day trip crosses into southern Senegal for Abéné, Kafountine and a creek boat trip.
Sample trip plans by holiday length
One week. Start with a half-day City Experience on your first or second day. Midweek, choose one full-day culture or history trip, such as the Round Trip or Kunta Kinteh & James Island. Finish with a river day on the Lazy Day Cruise or an early Bird & Breakfast. Leave beach days in between.
Two weeks. Follow the one-week plan, then add a Senegal day trip (Fathala Safari or Casamance) or a two-day trip to Tendaba or Georgetown.
Keen birders. Book Bird & Breakfast early in your stay to get your bearings, then add a two-day inland trip for river and wetland species.
Families and groups. The Kubuneh Special and Round Trip keep the day varied for all ages. A group of eight or more meets the minimum for the river cruises and Fishing Trip on its own.
Day trips to Senegal: what to know

The Gambia sits almost entirely inside Senegal, so a cross-border day trip is easier than many visitors expect. A few points to plan for:
- Bring your passport. It is required for both the Fathala Safari and the Casamance trip.
- Check the entry rules for your nationality before you travel, as they differ by passport.
- Expect a long day. The Fathala trip crosses the river on the Banjul–Barra ferry before reaching the border, so early starts are normal.
How to choose a Gambia tour operator
With many operators and beach sellers offering excursions, it is worth asking a few questions before you pay. A reliable Gambia tour operator should be able to give you clear answers on:
- Licensing and insurance. Ask whether the company is licensed and insured, and whether guides are officially registered.
- Prices and inclusions. You should know the price per person and what is and isn't included, such as drinks at restaurants.
- Group minimums. Some trips only run with a minimum number of guests. A good operator tells you this upfront.
- Pickup. Confirm that pickup from your hotel or apartment is included, and at what time.
- Independent reviews. Read recent traveller feedback on a platform such as TripAdvisor rather than relying on testimonials alone.
- Flexibility. Can the itinerary be adapted for a private group, a family or a special interest?
About Janeya Tours
Janeya Tours is a licensed and insured tour operator based in Kololi. It was founded in 2012 by Lamin Kinteh, known locally as Kunta, who was born in Kinteh Kunda village in the north of The Gambia. Kunta has many years of experience as an official tourist guide with the national tourist guide association, and he speaks three local languages as well as English and Dutch.
The team runs private and small-group trips across The Gambia and into Senegal, with hotel pickup on many tours and itineraries that can be adapted to your interests. You can read more about Janeya Tours or check independent reviews on TripAdvisor.
When is the best time for trips in The Gambia?
The Gambia has two seasons. The dry season brings reliable sunshine and is the busiest time for visitors. The rainy season runs from the end of May to early October, when the country turns green and farming activity is at its peak, though it can be hot and cloudy.
Daytime temperatures are typically 30–35°C, with nights around 20°C on the coast. It gets hotter the further inland you travel, which is one reason inland trips and birding tours start early. Many birdwatchers prefer the dry season, when migrant birds from Europe spend the winter in West Africa.
Practical tips before you book
- Send the details that matter: your travel dates, number of travellers, where you are staying and what you enjoy. This lets the operator suggest the right trip and confirm pickup.
- Book group-dependent trips early. River cruises and the Fishing Trip need at least eight guests; two-day inland trips need four.
- Pack for the day: sun protection, a hat, water and comfortable shoes. Bring binoculars for birding trips and swimwear for the Lazy Day Cruise.
- Budget for extras. Drinks at restaurants are not included on the half-day tours.
- Pace yourself. Mixing trip days with beach days makes the heat easier to manage and the holiday more enjoyable.
Frequently asked questions
How much do trips in The Gambia cost?
With Janeya Tours, half-day tours start from €40 per person, most full-day excursions cost €55–€60, Senegal day trips cost around €100 and two-day inland trips start from €135 per person. Longer 13-day tours through The Gambia and Senegal are priced from approximately €2,000 per person, depending on the itinerary.
What is the best trip for first-time visitors to The Gambia?
The half-day City Experience or the full-day Gambia Round Trip are good introductions. The City Experience covers Banjul and the Kachikally Crocodile Pool in a few hours, while the Round Trip adds markets, village life, Tanji and a beach stop.
Can you do a day trip to Senegal from The Gambia?
Yes. Janeya Tours runs day trips to the Fathala wildlife reserve and to the Casamance region in southern Senegal. You need your passport, and you should check the entry requirements for your nationality before travelling.
Do Gambia tours include hotel pickup?
Pickup from your hotel or apartment is included on many Janeya tours, including the half-day tours and the Lazy Day Cruise. The exact pickup point and time are confirmed when your tour is arranged.
How many trips should I book for a one-week holiday?
Two or three trips usually work well for a week: one half-day tour soon after you arrive, then one or two full-day trips spaced out with beach days in between.
Should I book trips before I arrive or once I'm in The Gambia?
Either can work. Booking ahead is useful for trips with group minimums, such as the river cruises, and for two-day or longer tours. Sending your dates in advance also gives the operator time to confirm availability and pickup.
Plan your Gambia trips with a local team
Whether you have a free morning or a full fortnight, the right mix of trips will show you far more of The Gambia than the beach alone. Send Janeya Tours your dates, group size and interests through the contact page, and the team will suggest the trips that suit you best and confirm availability.
